Spanish public broadcaster TVE signalled Wednesday that it will no longer
telecast bullfights live, breaking with a half-century of tradition to
protect young viewers.
"We have nothing against bullfights, but we do not always have access to
the broadcast rights and we must respect the timetable concerning
children's programming," TVE said in a statement.
It was referring to a voluntary code adopted by Spain's main television
stations which seeks to limit on-screen violence before 8 pm to protect
child viewers.
Bullfights are usually held in the afternoons or early evening.
TVE has not broadcast any live bullfights since the current season got
underway in March. In the past it usually broadcast at least 12
bullfights per year, the newspaper El Mundo said.
But TVE pointed out that it still broadcasts highlights in its newscasts,
as well as on late-night programmes.
"There is no veto, just as there is respect for those who are against
these sort of shows," it said.
Live bullfights continue to be broadcast on regional television stations
and on cable channels.
