Stilt dancers prepare to dance at the start of a procession to celebrate
the Feast of Mary Magdalene in the northern Spanish village of Anguiano
July 22, 2007. Eight local men on top of wooden stilts and dressed in
brightly colored shirts and petticoats escort a figure of Mary Magdalene
spinning down the cobbled streets of the village. The tradition has been
handed down from father to son for generations and is believed to have
begun when shepherds used stilts to traverse their flooded fields.
